Leadership Framework
A way of understanding leadership as the relationship between three dimensions: character, purpose and responsibility.
My coaching work is informed by a simple way of understanding leadership as the relationship between three dimensions:
- Character
- Purpose
- Responsibility
Leadership often becomes more complex as responsibility increases. Decisions carry wider consequences, expectations grow, and competing priorities emerge. In this context, clarity does not come only from strategy or capability, but from the degree to which these three dimensions remain aligned.
The Core Idea
Leadership tends to be more consistent and sustainable when character, purpose, and responsibility are held together.
When alignment is present, decision making becomes clearer and more coherent over time. When one dimension is underdeveloped or disconnected, tension often begins to surface in how leadership is expressed.
This is not a model of what leaders should do. It is a way of reflecting on how leaders think, decide, and act in complex environments.
Three Dimensions
Character
The inner dimension of leadership, including values, integrity, and self-awareness.
Character shapes how a leader responds under pressure and whether their actions remain consistent over time.
Purpose
The direction that gives meaning to leadership and informs priorities.
Purpose provides orientation, particularly when leaders are required to navigate uncertainty or competing demands.
Responsibility
The outward expression of leadership through accountability, stewardship, and care for others.
Responsibility connects intention with action and makes leadership visible in practice.
A Starting Point
These questions may support reflection:
- Where am I aligned?
- Where is there tension?
- What would alignment require?
How This Is Used in My Work
This way of thinking informs my coaching practice.
It provides a structure for reflection, particularly for leaders who are navigating complexity, ethical tension, or increased responsibility. Rather than offering answers, it helps create space for careful thinking and more coherent decision making over time.
